Period B- We finished our algebra tile creation and then students looked over old tests to prepare for the exams.

Period E - We finished up our discussion regarding 5.1-5.3.  Students had 30 minutes to work on and complete review.  It should be done by tomorrow.

Period B - We cut out algebra tiles to prepare for our polynomials unit.

Period E - We corrected the assignment on adding polynomials.  We then looked at substitution and students completed a riddle assignment called, "Why does a sheep scratch himself?"  HOMEWORK if not finished.

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Period B - We finished our scale diagrams and when finished some students worked on the review.

Period E - I will not be here but I left a textbook assignment on adding polynomials.  This is a new concept.  Here is a quick video explanation of the skill.  Watch from 7:30-8:44.

Period B - Unit 2 test day.

Period E - We did some "show me's" today to check for understanding.  We are ending off the week by trying our best to create polynomial songs that explained collecting and combining like terms.  Have yet to hear them but there is some beautiful singing going on as we practice!

IMPORTANT NEWS:  The midterm for my grade 9 classes is on Monday January 28th from 9-11AM.  To prepare for this, students should start to practice questions from units 1-3 that will be on the exam.  They can find these on  p148-149 ( all questions but #910b,21).  For question #7 please use BENCHMARKS to estimate the square roots!

UPDATE:  I forgot to mention that students are to complete this at their own pace.  It will be due on FRIDAY, January 25th.

Period B _ We worked on our Exponent review  HOMEWORK if not finished. Page 87 #1,3,6,7a,9,10,11,12,13,14,17,18,20,23,24,26,27.  Enjoy!

Period E - Students worked on a second assignment dealing with collecting like terms.  They should have handed it in today along with yesterday's homework.

Monday, January 14, 2013

Period B- We went over the weekend's homework and then students completed the rest of the assignment. P 85 16,17,19.  HOMEWORK if not finished.

Period E - We looked at collecting and combining like terms from section 5.2.  Students started a "riddle" assignment.  BOTH sides are HOMEWORK.

Here is a video explanation: http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/solving-linear-equations-and-inequalities/manipulating-expressions/v/combining-like-terms

Friday, January 11, 2013

Period B- We finished our notes on section 2.5.  Students had just enough time to start the assignment on P84 # 4,5,6,7,8,10,14,15,16,17,19.  Up to question 15 was assigned for HOMEWORK.  We also set a test date for next Friday, January 18th, on unit two!

Period E - Students played Memory to examine equivalent polynomials and we then started to look at like terms. NO HOMEWORK.

Thursday, January 10, 2013

Period B- Students completed a chart to find a pattern which that exposed the power or a power exponent law.  We will continue tomorrow.

Period E - Students completed p213 #1,2-13,15,16 on section 5.1. For help watch this video:

Period B - We talked about foreign aid today, in the context of Don Cherry's comments on Twitter.  We heard whether people agree or disagree with his comments and reasons for their position.  Click here to read the article and then take the poll.  We also looks at the use of statistics.

Period E - We finished modelling polynomials notes.  Students started  p213 #1,3,13,15,16.  I DID NOT assign it for homework.

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

Period B - Students completed a hand in assignment on  section 2.4 from the text.  We will finally start 2.5 tomorrow. NO HOMEWORK.

Period E - We started to model polynomials today. NO HOMEWORK. Tomorrow we continue and start to introduce some important terms.

Monday, January 7, 2013

Period B - We reviewed product of powers and quotient of powers laws.  Tomorrow we look at our last exponent laws.

Click here for a sample video on today's laws.

Period E - We started Polynomials today.  Students created their own personal set of algebra tiles to assist them as we progress through the unit.  They were then informed they could "gift" the hand-crafted tiles to someone when we were finished.  Exciting present for someone....

ALSO - PROGRESS REPORTS were given to students today.  They should be bringing them home.
